Emergence of Language in Social Interaction

ELISA – short for The Emergence of Language in Social Interaction – is an interdisciplinary project, funded by the European Research Council, that investigates the emergence of new sign languages in rural Bali, Indonesia. We are an international project team, based at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, and we are collaborating with local research assistants in Bali in addition to project partners around the world. Our work brings together the fields of sign language and gesture studies as well as cultural evolution research, and our aim is to analyse how languages are shaped by the social context of the communities in which they emerge. (click here for more information about the project).
